Am I a M.C.P?
According to Wiki, Chauvinism, "in its original and primary meaning, is an exaggerated, bellicose patriotism and a belief in national superiority and glory.[1] By extension it has come to include an extreme and unreasoning partisanship on behalf of any group to which one belongs, especially when the partisanship includes malice and hatred towards rival groups. Jingoism is the British parallel form of this French word.[1] A contemporary use of the term in English is in the phrase male chauvinism.[2] Because "chauvinism" is most often heard in this context, it is often mistakenly believed to refer exclusively to "male chauvinism" such as anti-feminism and sexism. It is an eponym of a possibly fictional French soldier Nicolas Chauvin who was credited with many superhuman feats in the late 18th century."
If you read it carefully, sentence by sentence, chauvinism is an extreme and unreasoning partisanship on behalf of any group to which one belongs.
And if you cannot be bothered to digest the above written, chauvinism, or male chauvinism simply means belittling and/or patronising women.
How this topic came about was interesting.
I was with a group of close friends when I suddenly asked a question of whether the guys minded if their partner (here we assume the partner is a female) earned more than them.
Not to my surprise, the guys answered that they were okay with it.
In my opinion, its okay as well. If my partner has the ability to earn more, why not? Since we are providing for the same family right? More financial freedom means more happiness, in most cases, until the curve for financial freedom plotted against happiness starts to plateau.
The girls were okay with it as well. I suppose its because they will feel more empowered? I dont really know. Because from what I understand, females earn, on an average lower incomes than males doing the same job with same experiences.
This then leads to my question to the girls, would they mind if their partner were house husbands. And by House Husbands I mean husbands who are permanently at home, not those taking 1 or 2 months paternal leaves to look after the children. Please.
Guess what? They all said ok.
And I said that they are okay with it because:
It is not happening to them at the moment, how can they be so sure that they are okay with the idea of a man who is capable of earning money stay at home and 有所好闲?
And that was when I got called a M.C.P by my GUY friends. Thanks huh.
To me, its NOT okay for me to stay at home and be a house husband.
But its okay for my wife to stay at home, if she wished to. (think my guys friends didnt hear this 2nd part and started booing me)
Only if she knows what it entails for her.
Like nothing to do for the whole day, no good tv shows, clean and clean the house, arrange and arrange the furniture, send the kids to school, pick the kids up, fuss over the family.
If she dislikes the idea, then ok, she can work. Of course I have to be earning big $$$ for that to happen. But 2 incomes is always better than 1.
More M.C.P shouts coming from GUYS. (roll eyes)
Maybe because I am a very tradition guy, in a sense that I cannot stand able bodied men not working, leeching off elderly parents or siblings or wife. I feel that they are very 窝囊.
I mean, you have all limbs intact and a brain right? So what's stopping you?
More M.C.P shouts coming from guys.
I dont know. Earn more money than me, ok. I should be proud for marrying a capable woman and proud of myself for my good eye sight.
But to not work while the woman slogs outside, definite no no for me.
I dont know, maybe I am a chauvinist in a most minor form.
This leads to so many social topics like the role of the nurturer, roles of a man and woman in a family unit with children, societal prejudices for males and females, roles of gender in a community and so on and so forth.
I think I belong to a traditional one, you can call me old fashion, or M.C.P, but I just feel its a man's job to provide for the woman, or family. Or just that I am 大男人主义。 Wait, isnt that the translation of M.C.P?
To the ladies possibly reading, you want:
1)a man who can take care of you both financially and emotionally or,
2)a man who can take care of you emotionally and potentially take care of you financially, but is not doing so?
To the guys reading:
你自己开心就好 :)
To myself: To work hard and have a happy family.
To myself again: I am freaking myself out with the previous sentence.
P.s. Yes the more I read the more I feel I M.C.P. hahahaahaha. shit. thats bad right?
